On Sunday night, at the 75th Golden Globe Awards, as Oprah Winfrey came to the stage to accept the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement, we all wondered what Oprah would say to the world considering the recent #MeToo movement that has taken over Hollywood and a nation.
In true Oprah form, she made the moment not about her, but about the women that are fighting to endure both past and present. “What I know for sure,” Oprah said, “is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have. And I’m especially proud and inspired by all the women who have felt strong enough and empowered enough to speak up and share their personal stories. Each of us in this room are celebrated because of the stories that we tell, and this year we became the story.”
With her speech, many of us felt inspired, empowered, and invigorated. We felt that the world heard us. We felt that our voices had the force of the world behind them pushing us toward change.
The next night, Ivanka Trump piped up on Twitter to weigh in: “Just saw Oprah’s empowering & inspiring speech at last night’s Golden Globes. Let’s all come together, women & men, & say #TimesUp! United.”
I paused in disbelief and shock. What planet does Ivanka live on?
In the world I live in, her father, President Donald Trump, has been accused of sexual misconduct by more than a dozen women. In the world that I live in, her father talks about moving on a woman like a bitch. In the world that I live in her father brags about kissing women without even waiting because, “When you are a star, they let you do it … you can do anything.” In the world that I live in, her father calls a grieving Gold Star widow a liar. In the world that I live in, her father mocks and calls a black congresswoman “wacky” when she stands up for a Gold Star widow. In the world that I live in, her father delights in tweeting about a woman’s physical appearance in a negative way.
How dare Ivanka post #TimesUp while we are all watching the clock wondering when time is going to catch up with her father?

Didn’t Trump also refer to his daughter as a “piece of ass”?
Yes.
Trump: “My daughter is beautiful.”
Stern: “By the way, your daughter…”
Trump: “She’s beautiful.”
Stern: “Can I say this? A piece of ass.”
Trump: “Yeah.”
Who allows that?! Yet this is who people believe is going to stand up for women.
How do we as Black people move forward from here? White America has clearly sent us a message by electing Trump as President. It’s like we’ve made no progress at all in this country.
All Ivanka knows is to ride the coattails of other people to promote herself. She is a disgrace to ALL women. Bye Ivanka.
I agree. She can do better but she chooses not to. I do not understand how you have THAT much power and you do nothing. That means for me, you DO NOT want to do anything. She is satisfied with things just the way they are.
Uhm, didn’t we actually witness her father displaying sexual aggression and harassment towards women, right out in public? And hse has done and said absolutely nothing! She only tweeted that to draw attention to herself, and probably someday use it to argue that she was on the right side of history when her father eventually gets his comeuppance.
How dare you. How dare you call out a woman who tweeted supporting it? But yet you will vote for a woman whose husband has had not one but three sexual allegations against him and two extramarital affairs? Juanita Broaddrick 1978 raped, Paula Jones 1991 he exposed himself, Kathleen Willey 1993 was groped, and let just not forget the TWO extramarital affairs. She can’t support something or believe in something because of who her father is?!?! You’re what’s wrong feminism. All because of who her father is YOU think she shouldn’t have a voice against it. So yeah a daughter of a man just like Bill Clinton groping and degrading women in public (including their wives) shouldn’t believe it’s wrong. Well Chelsea doesn’t need to say anything either about #timesup nor Hillary because they still deal with a disgusting monster as well.
